Grey’s Anatomy season 13 spoilers: Kevin McKidd on Owen’s state of mind

Kevin McKidd -

Today many cast members for Grey’s Anatomy season 13 took part in a panel discussion for PaleyFest, and with that, there were of course a few details sprinkled out here and there about the future for some of these characters.

We’re coming out of an episode now that featured big movement for April and Jackson — while it’s far too early at present to confirm that their relationship will stay romantic, the two of them sleeping together does get the ball rolling in that direction. It was important for Jackson to see his father in order to better understand what sort of person he wanted to be, and also just how different he’s hoping to be from that man to go along with it.

So what’s next for Owen and Amelia? We’ve shared already that the two are going to have some big moments ahead on Thursday’s new episode (see the promo for it here), and we’ve got some further insight into that via Kevin McKidd. Speaking (per The Hollywood Reporter), he makes it clear that we’re going to see him struggle mostly with the fact that the two seem to want different things:

“Owen is really struggling … He’s a very tortured guy and he thinks the thing that is going to fix him is a beautiful family with this woman [Amelia] but she doesn’t want to right now. He’s waiting and he loves her and he’s tortured and we’ll see what happens.”

One of the funnier moments of the event today was apparently when McKidd joked that one of the things that he enjoys the most about the show is working with the men, given that so many of them are scattered and it’s not all that regular an occurrence. They are all often off doing separate things, and there are no huge storylines connecting all of them right now. The closest was probably Alex and DeLuca earlier this season, and they were hardly friendly with one another. That dynamic was as adversarial as they come, and there was a good reason for it.

We do very much hope that the majority of the characters on the show are able to work things out, but the reality here is still, simply, that this is a landscape where such things rarely ever happen. It’s something that we’ve become used to over time.
