Survivor: Game Changers episode 3 review: Tai in the middle again
We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves here, since we do want to get to showing off the new tribes.
Mana – Caleb, Hali, Debbie, Tai, Brad, and Sierra
Nuku – JT, Malcolm, Sandra, Aubry, and Michaela
Tavua – Troyzan, Zeke, Ozzy, Cirie, Andrea, and Sarah
Tavua is the green tribe. We like green buffs for whatever reason. Troyzan clearly didn’t like it prior to finding the clue, given that he was clearly in the minority as the only Mana guy on his tribe. He had to retrieve the idol during the challenge. After Nuku won the challenge and Tavua got second place, he got it! We don’t know how anyone noticed, but he managed to pull it off.
Nuku a.k.a. the quest of JT and goats
JT is really lucky that his tribe is great at winning challenges, because what he did was completely ridiculous. He took his entire tribe out into the ocean and left them there to “fix a spear,” otherwise known as trying to find an immunity idol. He’s no Troyzan.
At least JT can take credit for being much kinder to goats than other CBS contestants over the past year. After a mother goat was captured, a lengthy debate followed as to whether or not to kill it. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed since that would’ve been one of the sadder moments in Survivor history otherwise. Do we really need another Survivor: Australia crisis on our hand? Sure, that may not be anywhere near the worst Mike Skupin headline anymore, but still.
Mana makes a decision
We also found it ridiculously entertaining how Brad Culpepper is apparently the Martha Stewart of Survivor, hanging decorations and making camp into some sort of home. To be fair, he’s doing a good job given that he wasn’t being as crazy this time or as commandeering in his tribe. His conversation with Tai was rather effective, since he let Tai come to a decision on his own rather than to tell him what to do.
Caleb and Hali were in the minority on the tribe, so the moment that the Mana tribe lost, it started to be about who the team should get rid of. There was also one other problem: The relationship between Tai and Caleb. They were good friends on Survivor: Kaoh Rong. Tai went to Caleb’s wedding! They obviously have some sort of pregame relationship. Brad wanted Caleb gone, but wasn’t invested enough to force Tai to do anything.
When the votes came in, the person sent home was revealed to be … Caleb! Beast Mode Cowboy has left the building, though this time via a torch. Unfortunately for him, he was out-talked at the Tribal Council, and also a rather unfortunate victim of a tribe swap where the numbers did fall in his favor.
Overall
Surprisingly, this season’s had three pretty predictable Tribal Council votes in the sense that there were no major idol plays and majority votes. Yet, kudos to the editors for still finding a way to keep things interesting. Grade: B.
