This Is Us episode 16 sets further live+3 records; the power of a powerful hour

Randall -

Clearly, William’s death episode of This Is Us had more than just an impact with viewers who were sobbing all over the country. It also made an enormous statement in the ratings.

This episode, which carries with it the title of “Memphis,” ended up drawing in total a 4.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic when the live+3 data was calculated by NBC. What this means effectively is that this show rose a solid 80%, which is the highest increase percentage-wise that the show has achieved over the course of the entire series so far. The show also added another 5.022 million to its total viewer count, bringing it for the week to 14.389 million. This is the biggest increase ever for any broadcast scripted program on a Tuesday night.

What these ratings show to you further is that this is a show that is now slowing down in the slightest when it comes to momentum. Not only that, but there is also now potentially even more momentum in the wake of William’s death episode “Memphis.” More than likely, there were people out there who heard about how amazing the episode was and wanted to watch it as soon as they possibly could. This explains the higher ratings now, so it’ll be interesting to see if they remain that way when some of the final live+7 numbers are released once we get a few more days into the future.

There are only two more episodes left of the season, and that may be reason enough for some people out there to start welling up with tears yet again. The reality that we’re facing here is that this is a show that is about to enter a very long hiatus, and there is going to be a challenge come this fall in figuring out the proper ways to get people hooked all over again. (Remember, the show’s actually been renewed for TWO more seasons.)
