Let It Shine season 2: Should BBC renew Gary Barlow series?
Tonight on BBC One, the final episode of Let It Shine is coming on the air, and with that, we’ve come to the point in the journey where we ask another important question. Should this mark the end of the road for the series? Should there be a Let It Shine season 2?
If you think back to the early stages of the series, there was all sorts of optimism for the show to be the next big singing show. Gary Barlow is tremendous, and the judging panel for the most part is outstanding. The talent’s even been top-notch, and it’s nice to have a show emphasize musical theater for a change. It’s certainly a bit of a forgotten art and is unfairly downplayed by television.
Unfortunately, along the way the show’s run into a pair of problems that make its renewal hopes a bit of a mystery.
Personal connections
This is where we found ourselves getting into problems with this series. There are simply too many contestants, and too little time to get to know many of them. Since they also are all young men within a certain age range, they don’t stand out from each other. It’s been difficult to find people to specifically root for, and while this is something the show could change in theory, it’s challenging. If there was a Let It Shine season 2, our advice would be to instead cast a leading man and woman for a musical. This narrows down the field, and gets you more diversity at the same time.
Diminishing returns
The ratings may not also benefit the show all that much. While not terrible, they have fallen since the start of the show and there may not be enough for the network to inspire confidence. Singing shows are tough in 2017. They are even trickier when you think for a moment about how many there are in Britain alone. You’ve got this this show, The Voice UK, Britain’s Got Talent, and The X Factor. That’s a lot for a country with this population!
