‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ gets intense thanks to Jim Jefferies, Piers Morgan

Tonight, “Real Time with Bill Maher” aired a new episode on HBO, and to say that this one was intense would be making one of the biggest understatements out there.

For those of you wondering why in the world Maher had Piers Morgan on his show in the first place, know this: He does like to have opposing viewpoints on the show from time to time. However, the majority of the time this happens, we’re not entirely sure that it goes anywhere like this. (It has to be better, right?)

During one of his panel discussions tonight, Morgan got into a heated argument with Australian comedian Jim Jefferies, one in which things started political with a conversation about President Trump … and then they ended in a much more personal manner. After Morgan proceeded to reinforce his opinion time and time again, Jefferies responded with “you just like that you won [‘The Celebrity Apprentice’] and you have a famous friend, mate.” (Given that Morgan’s own profile picture is of himself with Trump, he may have a point.)

At this point, Morgan commented that Jefferies may be “losing the audience,” which led in turn to him prompting the audience to gauge their response. Based on how they acted beyond this, we feel fairly confident in saying that he had, in fact, not lost them in the slightest. They seemed to be perfectly on board with just about everything that was going down, including Jefferies flipping Morgan off right in the middle of the show.

Hey, it’s HBO, this sort of stuff can happen — ironically, this bird-flipping moment is why we cannot show a clip of the exchange here. (We’re sure it’s on social media here.) It’s not really our role to get too political one way or another, but from the perspective of late-night TV this may be one of the most contentious moments we’ve seen since Trump’s Inauguration. Also, “Real Time” tonight may be setting the stage for an epic edition of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” when he returns to the air.
