‘Blindspot’ season 2, episode 13: How big is the Weller reveal?

Weller -

Blindspot” has done a good job over the course of the series’ run giving you a few more nuggets here and there on some of its characters, and come the end of Wednesday night’s new episode, there was a chance to learn a thing or two more on the character of Weller.

As it turns out, he may not have been in control of his actions nearly as much as he once thought that he was. Shepherd was actually Ellen Briggs, a connection to his past as a cadet. She actually ended up funding much of his education without him knowing about! Learning this about her puts him in a complicated place, mostly because it’s clear that he was meant to be in New York all along in order to look after Jane eventually. She was a puppet-master of much of the whole ordeal, and it puts him in what is fair to say is an unstable situation.

Just in case you do want to see what is coming up for the character in the wake of this reveal, executive producer Martin Gero had the following to say per Entertainment Weekly:

“It freaks him out. It makes him recontextualize everything, including whether he was meant to be an FBI agent or not. It feels like his choices were guided by Shepherd looking out for him. It comes from a benevolent benefactor. So, he’s definitely really nervous about it. What’s important to point out is something that Shepherd says, which is like, her looking out for him was not part of the plan from the beginning. She hasn’t been planning this for 20 years, but then she saw that there was a space for him to be used.”

The final line is important in designating the difference between Weller and Jane; he was not so much the long game, but he’s now a clear component in it (regardless of whether or not he ever wanted for it to be so). Given that there are more reveals coming tied to Stage 2, this is going to become harder and harder for Weller to bear — especially as he has to deal with the notion of destiny and if he’s going to have to join Shepherd someday.
