‘The Walking Dead’ season 7: Latest promo all about legacy — and one freaky walker

twdIf “The Walking Dead” was trying to drum up excitement for the remainder of season 7 just on the basis of cool-looking walkers alone, we’ve got a little bit of evidence that they’ve succeeded. There’s a one-second glimpse of a walker with some sort of spiky helmet in this teaser below, and it will probably haunt our dreams from the remainder of the next ten days until the show returns.

As for the focus of the remainder of the promo, that’s really all about trying to set up the sense of danger and fear that’s present here. Also, it raises the question of legacy, and what these characters are going to leave behind for the future.

Why is it so important to frame the story in such a way? A good bit of that may stem from the fact that Rick Grimes and many other members of the group are probably aware of the fact that they are walking into what is effectively a suicide mission with Negan. They want to be able to stop the tyranny, but they have limited resources and no guarantees that any of the other nearby communities are going to have the bravery to go along with it. Therefore, they almost have to present the narrative that the focus here is preserving the world for the future, and making it better for the next generation of people who are hopefully going to be around. Should they have to deal with Negan and his nonsense? Clearly not. Nobody should.

These eight episodes will set the stage for what could be an epic showdown between sides, but there is no guarantee that the group will win or that it will even be over this season. Given the current pace of this when it comes to this show, it may take until season 14 before we get to the other side of Rick’s plan.
