‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 10 review: Where is Alex — and Amelia, for that matter?

Jo and Alex -On Thursday night’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” you could have easily put out a pair of missing persons reports for two characters in Alex and Amelia. Both had disappeared from the people who cared about them the most, but the good news is that by the time that we made it to the end of “Jukebox Hero,” we knew where the two were.

For Amelia, her decision to steer clear of Owen came mostly out of her personal self-doubt and fear that the relationship was doomed and could never work. The ghosts of her past were still flying around in her head, and we’ve learned through seeing her on this show over time that she cannot let go of these ghosts easily. Owen is a determined enough guy that we do envision him fighting for her, though even he may eventually reach his breaking point (a person can only fight so much). Let’s just hope that it doesn’t come to that. We like the two together, and they’ve went through so much that this relationship could serve as a form of healing for both of them to try to move forward and get their lives back on track again.

As for Alex … it turns out that he was at Meredith’s asleep the whole time, while she was out looking at various prisons to see if he was behind bars. We learned a thing or two about his trial last week on the prison episode, and we imagine along the way that this will come up again. We did hear about it this week indirectly when Arizona mentioned to DeLuca that she really missed Alex, though she realized that this was not a nice thing to say to him given their own history.

Moment of real talk – When Meredith saw Alex in bed, who else thought that they were going to kiss for a second there? We don’t necessarily consider ourselves a huge Malex ‘shipper, but at the same time it definitely felt like the writers were leaning in that direction for a second.

The battle against Minnick – We do feel in some ways for Eliza, given that she was clearly just brought into the Grey Sloan Memorial to do a job, and did not expect to get anywhere near the sort of treatment or resistance that she received from many of the other people around her. They were resistant to her every move and suggestion, and in a way, it’s understandable given that her teaching method seems to be to let young doctors learn from some of their mistakes on the fly. That may work in some jobs that are a little less of the high-stakes variety, but this one? Let’s just say that this is worthy of an eye-roll or two or three. Minnick probably is perfectly nice outside of the hospital, but within the walls she’s perceived more as the enemy.

Overall – What this episode did well was not drawing out the mysteries of where Alex and Amelia were. Getting them more involved on the show now will help in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, the case of the week revolving around a baby’s birth and the emotional consequences that went along with it (especially from her father) proved to be effective and emotional in its own right. Grade: B.
