‘Outlander’ season 3 notes: Filming updates and Easter eggs

Outlander -

We feel like we’ve spent a good bit of time as of late discussing “Outlander” through the lens of recent awards and scheduling questions, but in the process of some of that, we may not have given the series itself its due! Let’s resolve that today, since the excellence of the show is one of the reasons that we love writing about it so much in the first place.

Filming Updates – We’re always wary of sharing set pictures, and it’s something that we probably won’t ever do for one reason more than any other: It can be a little distressing for production to try and focus on making a show while also dealing with a number of people trying to share unauthorized snaps of the cast and crew in action. (It’s a little bit of a different situation if there are set photos coming from Starz or one of the actors / producers.)

With that said, it’s fairly common knowledge that the show did some filming recently in Edinburgh, a place where the likes of Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan feel the real-world impact of their work a bit more than they do out in the countryside. Sometimes, there can be a bubble effect that comes from working out separate from most of the fans; as the two mentioned in their recent Facebook Live chat, they’ve actually met quite a few of them while working in the city.

Moving forward, the show is traveling to a coastal village in Scotland for more filming, and there are likely many more locations to go beyond that (this is a show that really does capitalize on the beauty of its location). Eventually, we are going to see production travel to South Africa for some of the Jamaica-set scenes, but that does not appear to be in the immediate future.

Something fun for the fans – It you really love looking for clues or various “Outlander” Easter eggs, be sure to put on your Sherlock Holmes hat (“Sherlock” – “Outlander” crossover, anyone? Probably not, but there’s probably fanfiction about it out there somewhere) while watching the latest season. Based on what executive producer Matthew B. Roberts said on Twitter, there are a lot of “well-placed nuggets” throughout the season. Maybe these are references to events in the books, or mentions of things that have happened over the course of the series. We probably should not say too much more than this, given that the mystery is a part of the fun! We’re just happy that the team cares enough to put these in there.
