‘Chicago PD’ season 4: Is making Voight Lindsay’s biological father the right move?

Chicago PDFor the past few episodes of “Chicago PD” we’ve had a pretty serious story arc involving Lindsay as she met a man named Jimmy that Bunny claimed was her real father, but that quickly unraveled into a giant dumpster fire as most things involving Bunny often do. After Halstead swiped a coffee cup used by Jimmy at the station and did a DNA test on it, he was the bearer of bad news as Lindsay (and Jimmy) both learned that he was not her father after all and that everything they both so desperately wanted to believe in was a giant lie. The weird thing about it all was that we actually believe Bunny when she said she was certain Jimmy was Lindsay’s biological father, so it was a bit of a shock to her as well when the truth came out.

This has left Lindsay in a bad head space to say the least as she basically had the ideal father dangled in front of her face, only to have that dream parental relationship shattered once again, and after having a mother like Bunny her whole life that blow has to be even harder to accept. Things are even more tense between Lindsay and Bunny then usual (if you can believe that) and when we last saw Lindsay talking about the situation to her friend, there were some upsetting suggestions brought up. Her friend posed the idea of Lindsay packing up from Chicago and leaving Bunny in the dust to start somewhere new since Bunny is constantly Lindsay’s downfall. When she asks Lindsay “what’s keeping you in Chicago” we were confused by the question since Lindsay actually has a lot going on there. Not only does she have a stable loving relationship with Halstead, but she has a great job that she loves and helps her feel like she’s making a real difference. Add on top of all that her incredibly close relationship with Voight and Bunny is not enough to drive her away from Chicago in our humble opinion.

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room… Voight possibly being Lindsay’s biological father. The show planted this seed a few episodes ago after Bunny learned that Jimmy wasn’t Lindsay’s father after all. The heated discussion between Voight and Bunny revealed that these two spent a night together (as much as Voight wants to forget that it happened) and that maybe a DNA test on Voight is in order. Voight shrugged off the idea that he’s Lindsay’s father, but could he be? And even more then that do fans want him to be?

Lindsay and Voight already have a very special father/daughter type relationship as he has always been looking out for her and giving her as many opportunities to turn her life around as he can. On the flip side, Lindsay looks up to Voight as a father figure, not only because of what he’s done for her, but also what he does for the community. Their bond is so close that she’s even moved a dead body in order to protect Voight, so do we really need him to also be her biological father? In some ways we can see why fans would want to see that happen as it would complete the circle between them, but for us that circle is already complete because of the relationship they already have and they don’t need to be blood related to make that happen. They are bonded forever in ways that many biological parents and children aren’t (at least we hope there aren’t many children out there that have to hide dead bodies for their parents). Also, there is something very special about that adoptive parental relationship that we don’t see explored enough on TV, so we would like to see Voight and Lindsay not be blood relatives.

Another NBC show in “The Blacklist” has come up against some criticism over the years for dangling the idea that Reddington might be Liz’s father for four seasons – which is a little excessive at this point – so we are hoping that “Chicago PD” isn’t looking to drag this story out. Just give us a definitive answer, yes or no, and let us all move forward with the truth in hand. If Voight turns out to actually be Lindsay’s father, we don’t see much changing between them anyways since they already have this type of bond. The relationship this could change if he is her father is the one between Bunny and Voight. He is already protective of Lindsay and if she turns out to be his we could see Voight finding a way to push Bunny right out the door to keep Lindsay from getting her heart crushed by Bunny’s nonsense any further.

Do you think that Voight should be Lindsay’s biological father or do you like him in more of the adoptive role instead? Leave us a comment in the box below with your thoughts.
