‘The 100′ season 4: Why Marie Avgeropoulos’ Octavia is the one to watch this season
On Wednesday, February 1 we are finally getting new episodes of “The 100” (season 4) and after the major cliffhanger from last season where A.L.I.E. basically told everyone that they have 6 months left before a nuclear explosion will kill everyone, we expect there to be a lot of panic going on this season to say the least.
Outside of the obvious storylines this season (Clarke and the Skaikru trying to stop the nuclear meltdown from wiping out the human race) there’s another storyline that we are even more invested in and that’s the story of Octavia. She’s a far cry from when we first met her up on the space station! She started out as this sheltered young woman with an adventurous spirit filled with hope, but that person has certainly changed. We will admit that when we were first introduced to Octavia back in season 1 she was one of the characters that we had the hardest time connecting to and now she’s become the one we tune in for every week. There are so many layers to her and they are only going to compound this season now that the stakes are as high as they are.
Once on earth, Octavia faced insurmountable trials and for us she has faced the most tragedy out of anyone from Skaikru. She not only lost the man she loves in Lincoln, but she was betrayed by the people who she thought were on her side when they shot him and left him to die in the mud (and let’s not forget that they also floated her mother). Add to that the blame she’s heaped on her brother Bellamy for Lincoln’s death and that leaves her in a place where she doesn’t have Skaikru on her side, and she has also lost her only family member. The break up of Bellamy and Octavia is particularly devastating since these two are the only siblings from Skaikru in existence and it’s the relationship we have the most invested in as a viewer.
Now we take a look at the Trikru. This is where Octavia feels the most at home, and where her adventurous spirit is still allowed to come out and play. Some from this group have nurtured that spirit and pushed her to be the woman that she is meant to be, but after everything that the Skaikru has done to them, not everyone trusts her or wants to accept her – and why would they want to? She was part of the Skaikru who came to earth, killed their people and took their resources. So where does this leave Octavia going into “The 100” season 4?
With this crushing pain washing over her, Octavia is going to be in a very dark place this season. She’s lost, lonely, angry and is willing to do whatever it takes to make these feelings go away. Indra will still be guiding her and with the tension between the Skaikru and Trikru being as bad as it, we can see Indra pushing Octavia’s anger into vengeance. The trailers have revealed that Octavia will become an assassin of sorts and her reputation as the “Skai-ripper: Death from above” will echo through all the different tribes. The one thing about her becoming this assassin is that it’s still a mystery as to who exactly she’s working for. Will it be Indra or will she be part of something bigger? The one thing we are expecting is that Skaikru is going to have their hands full when it comes to Octavia’s anger over what they did to Lincoln and as we’ve seen from the trailer, she’s going on a killing spree.
The one theme “The 100” season 4 trailers have been pushing hard is “survival” – more specifically who is going to survive this nuclear meltdown? We know that the Trikru have already survived one round with radiation so they are good candidates for survival, but what about the Skaikru? They were up in the space station thinking that the earth was uninhabitable because of the radiation, not knowing that there were people who not only survived it, but found a way to thrive. With the different tribes so divided, it’s going to be hard for them to come together to stop this threat, but if one person can connect them, we actually expect it to be Octavia. She comes from Skaikru and she has lived with Trikru – she is the only one that has connection to both. While we know that Clarke is the intended savior, we would love to see Octavia step into that position for just this season and watch Clarke work through some of her own losses. The real journey for Octavia this season will be overcoming her grief and anger so that she can focus on bringing everyone together – as they used to say on “Lost”… “live together, die alone”.
What are you hoping to see happen with Octavia this season and do you think she’s going to find her place in this world? Do you think she and Bellamy are going to find peace with one another and become a family again or has that ship sailed? Leave us a comment in the box below with your thoughts.
