‘Call the Midwife’ season 6 faced rewrites to accommodate Miranda Hart exit

Call the Midwife -

If you think back to last year, there was a little bit of flip-flopping over whether or not Miranda Hart was actually going to be reprising her role of Chummy on BBC One’s “Call the Midwife.” For a while, it appeared that she was, but then scheduling got in the way and Hart was forced to exit once more.

So what was trying to handle this situation like behind the scenes? Let’s just say that it was tricky, given that creator / writer Heidi Thomas had already planned out some of what her story was going to be for the season before there was a change made at the last minute. Here is what Thomas specifically had to say on the subject in a new interview with the Radio Times:

“We were thrilled when Miranda approached us, and I storylined the series for her, but at relatively short notice she had to withdraw … I just rewrote the series without Miranda in it, which was sad because we would have loved having her in it. She is part of the Call The Midwife family. But (this time) it wasn’t meant to be.”

Maybe you can consider this comment as a sign of some hope that we do get to see a little bit more of the character down the road, mostly because of her warmth, her humor, and her bringing something different to the show when it comes to a dimension. It’s good of Thomas to keep that option open for Hart, even if it is just for a short cameo. Given that there are multiple seasons confirmed for the show coming up, that certainly leaves the door open for the possibility of it happening.

The sixth season of “Call the Midwife” is going to be premiering on Sunday night, and we know that many of the characters are going to be returning from South Africa to find new stories — and also new troubles — waiting for them.
