‘Shadowhunters’ season 2, and scarier times ahead
As we near the premiere of the second season of “Shadowhunters” on Freeform, it is looking a little bit more and more like this will feel like a very different show at times than the one that you saw last year. The characters are a little bit more grown-up, but to go along with that, there’s also a much-increased presence of danger that comes via more forces of darkness. The tone itself is also grounded in a darker sort of reality, and that is in part due to having the presence of some new showrunners in Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer. These two are replacing Ed Decter, who worked to develop the TV version of the story and ran the first season.
While there are some cases where a showrunner swap happens and not too many people can tell when the series actually airs, it doesn’t exactly seem like that is going to be the case this time around. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dominic Sherwood (who plays Jace) had the following message to pass along on this particular subject:
“You’ll absolutely be able to tell there’s someone else at the helm. It’s more grounded in reality, so the issues and the danger that we face do seem more real. Hopefully the audience will be able to empathize with that because it’s something you can watch and go man, these problems they really do seem like life or death now. We’ve based this show much more in the horror genre rather than teen sci-fi, so some of the stuff that we had on set was actually quite terrifying.”
Given the sort of stuff that these characters are up against, shouldn’t it be more of a horror show? That’s been part of our criticism with other series in this genre, which have tried to tone down the scares for the sake of providing some sort of false fantasy, one that may not be much of an accurate representation of how characters would really react. Sure, there may still be supernatural romances and whatnot, but wouldn’t they still be worried about death and the various monsters coming their way?
