‘the Leftovers’ season 3 spoilers: Check out a first-look photo!
We’ve got a new season of “The Leftovers” coming to HBO in the spring, and with that in mind, it probably should not come as much of a surprise again that we’re going to be seeing the show head once again to a new place. Through the first season, we were mostly located in New York. Meanwhile, for season 2 we were in Texas. Now, we’re going all the way to Australia for the upcoming third season.
The first photo below comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, and in the event you were wondering why in the world the show decided to go this far off the map to further along their story, executive producer Damon Lindelof had the following to say:
“Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally … And there’s also something about Australian cinema — it’s primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it’s Mad Max movies or Walkabout, or Waking Fright or Peter Weir movies.”
Lindelof also made it clear that the character of Kevin’s father is going to have a much larger role this time around than he did during the second season of the show, and that could have something to do with what he ends up ultimately doing once he is in the country. This sounds exciting, but given that this show operates so much on the element of surprise, it’s probably the wrong move to create expectations for it now.
One other thing that you shouldn’t do is continue to hope for some sort of answers as to why the Departure is taking place — that remains in the wind, and HBO and the producers seem to be fine with allowing it to be that way. Given that there is probably no way for the show to ultimately have a satisfying answer to this mystery, steering clear of it is likely the right move. Why create more problems for yourself when you don’t have to?
