‘The OA’: Three new teases for mysterious Netflix series

The OA -

What is “The OA“? That’s not a question many people have an answer to beyond those who worked on it, and for the most part, that was intentional… brilliantly intentional.

This series may be so mysterious that even “American Horror Story: Roanoke” is impressed since they did a great job at hiding their theme until the premiere. What we’ve got for you below are a series of different sneak peeks highlighting some various aspects of the series. Brit Marling (“Another Earth”) is the female lead playing Prairie Johnson, a woman disconnected somewhat from the rest of the world. Does she belong — and was she always alive? These are questions that this series wants us to ask. As for the reason why, well we will all have to tune in to find out.

Previewing this show in traditional ways is almost impossible, largely because this is such an atypical show. The various press releases we’ve seen for it suggest that “The OA” is meant to challenge the way in which we view television, and it may offer a paradigm shift in our interpretation of what we see. The easiest parallel to draw right now is between this show and “Westworld” given their heavier subject matter and conceptual nature. Both also seem destined for at least a million or so think-pieces (CarterMatt included so be on the look out!). The clear difference is that with “Westworld,” it felt as though there was something more to go on (we had source material), whereas here there’s also nothing beyond these previews and the idea that this show is meant to raise questions about identity and mortality.

Even if you’re on the fence about the show based on these clips (it’s hard to necessarily feel committed at the moment), there’s one perfectly good reason to watch: What in the world else is on the air right now? It’s the holiday season, and the bulk of programming is in repeats. “Westworld” is also over for the next year-plus, and “The Walking Dead” will not be back until we roll around to February.
