‘The X Factor’ UK winner Matt Terry signs with Sony, not with Simon Cowell’s record label

Matt Terry -

Well, consider this to be a bigger blindside than almost anything that happened on “The X Factor” this season. Rather than sign directly with Simon Cowell and his Syco label in the UK, reigning champ Matt Terry has gone in a slightly different direction. Specifically, he is now a part of the RCA family.

According to a new report coming in right now via The Sun, Terry has been handed down an arrangement with Sony Music, and it is one that apparently has the blessing of the music mogul to go along with it. Apparently, the thinking here is that Sony can help to turn Matt into the next Olly Murs more so than Syco can, and Olly is already a part of that record label’s family. It’s actually a rather-generous move when you think about it, mostly because it is thinking with the artist first and everyone else second. That is not really something that you tend to see a lot of these days.

Ultimately, we do think that Matt has a reasonable chance of having a successful career down the road, but like with almost every other thing at the moment when it comes to the music industry, so much of it is circumstantial. For the time being, it’s far too early to know for sure if his debut single will be good, and so much of his success is going to be directly dependent on precisely how many people choose to listen to that. The winner’s single is nice and it’s selling very well, but there isn’t necessarily a huge correlation between that and selling millions of records down the road.

Hopefully, some further music from Matt will come in 2017. We imagine that he will do what many other artists have over the years and take some time off for the Christmas holiday and then get back into working hard in the studio in the new year.
