Could ‘Power’ season 4 (or season 5) work without 50 Cent’s Kanan?

Power -

Yesterday, the news came out that shocked many within the world of “Power” — 50 Cent seems interested in leaving as a result of the most-recent Golden Globe snub for the show. It is one of many slights that has happened to the Starz series, and on the surface, the frustration may be understandable. “Power” is the #1 show on Starz, and one that managed to improve its viewership considerably week after week.

However, at the same exact time this is a show that doesn’t seem built for awards-shows. It’s not overly artistic or pretentious — it tells things as they are. It’s dark, gritty, and at times violent. It’s a show for the fans first and for critics second, which is fine for us given that we watch things to be entertained. It is for this reason that we maintain our stance that 50 as a performer should care more about the crowd rather than the select few who make the decisions. We imagined that when his music was at its heyday, he cared very much about the millions who were buying his album rather than what critics were saying about it.

We can’t tell 50 what to feel or not feel; instead, the matter at hand here is speaking more about the show through the lens of Kanan. After nearly dying at the end of season 2, the character spent most of the season getting back to his previous health while also being roped into some new criminal schemes. Eventually, one of his plots revolved around getting closer to Jamie’s son Tariq in an effort to drive further wedges into Ghost’s family; there are some fates worse than death, and for Ghost, one of them could be ending up alone and with no one wanting to be around him.

The thing about the Kanan character now is that there are easily some reasons in which the character could be killed off without it looking too jarring on the show. For example, remember for a minute here that Kanan is not a man with many friends, and the moment Ghost runs into him, he will be tempted to put a bullet into him. There were some situations in which he could have met a different end, but Kanan just couldn’t stay away from a life of violence and pain.

Ultimately, we’d be surprised if this character makes it to the end of the series. The show’s better when he is active on it, but if 50 does intend on leaving, there are ways to make that happen, and we do think that the show would find a way to go on without him.

“Power” season 4 is currently filming, and will premiere at some point in the summer of 2017.
