‘The Walking Dead’ season 7: Who’s in the boots — and following Father Gabriel?

twdTonight, “The Walking Dead” answered a few questions, such as whether or not we were going to get a chance to see Rick stand up to Negan and get a little bit of his bravery back. Also, at the same time we also had a chance to learn who were the show’s latest victims: Spencer and Olivia. We can’t say that we’re altogether shocked to lose either one of them, just because for the most part (save for Glenn and Abraham) Alexandria residents do always tend to go a whole lot quicker than some of the people in Rick’s group. We get the whole concept of “no one’s safe”, but really it’s the people outside of Rick’s group that are in the most danger on this show.

However, the biggest question that we can assume many fans having right now is relatively simple: Who’s in the boots, and following Father Gabriel? We saw this mystery character watching Rick and Aaron as they looted a house surrounded by water and then again in the closing minutes of the episode, but we don’t know who they are.

Who could it be? You can argue that maybe it’s someone from the comics that we haven’t seen yet; that would be the most effective use of the cliffhanger, since anyone otherwise would not be nearly as important. The hard thing about this sort of tease is that in not showing us the person’s face, you create the impression that they are someone enormously important — if that turns out to not be the case, everyone gets disappointed and angry and having pissed off fans is never a good thing. It’s not like “The Walking Dead” is unfamiliar with that sentiment, right? (Cue Glenn under a dumpster somewhere.)

What if the person is Heath? We’re not sure how many people would be jumping up and down at the prospect of seeing him again since he’s not really a big player, but it’s possible. We just feel like if that character does return, he probably isn’t long for this world given Corey Hawkins has another job on “24: Legacy” and he can only be in some many places at once. The dude’s only human! Still, does this mystery boot person really have the demeanor of a guy like Heath? He would’ve had to gone through something super-serious in the time in which he was gone to be putting up some of those profanity filled notes.

Let’s just hope that if this is a new comic character, they’re satisfying enough to make sense for some of the people who don’t read the comics and have any idea who they are or what they mean. Of course, we want to hear all of your theories on this subject below — we’ll have more about it, so stay tuned!
