‘Call the Midwife’ 2016 Christmas Special: When will it air on BBC One?
Sure, it may still be a while until we get to the “Call the Midwife” Christmas Special airing on BBC One, but since we are excited for it (as we know many of you are as well) let’s talk about some of what we can expect.
Today, we’re talking specifically of when the series, starring Helen George, Charlotte Ritchie, and many more, is going to be airing. According to a report from the Radio Times, the series is going to officially air its special at 8:00 p.m. London time on Christmas Day, which is basically prime network real estate. We know that the BBC will be airing a lineup of entirely-new programming through most of the night, so getting the chance to air in this particular spot is all the more significant. That’s one way that television differs between America and the UK – Networks here would never air new programming on Christmas, where as the UK airs all kinds of new programming and Christmas specials on the 25th and it makes sense. After you’ve had a feast and the gifts are all unwrapped, why not sit around the television with your family for some night time entertainment?
As for what the story will be, odds are that you’ve heard a few different things already. We’re going to be venturing all the way to South Africa with the women of Nonnatus House as they look to provide more of their services for some women in dire need of supplies and support in the region. This is a chance for our characters to feel like they are making a far greater impact on the world, and there is likely going to be some hope and happiness that comes out of this.
However, at the same time we do anticipate seeing a certain degree of tragedy, just because we are within a world where this sort of thing does happen. These shows are often bittersweet by nature; while there may be hope for a brighter future, at the same time there’s also a sense of reality. ‘Call The Midwife” is not going to smooth things over for the sake of doing it, so when you watch on Christmas Day, be sure to do so with that in mind and with a set of tissues nearby.
