‘Game of Thrones’ actor Peter Vaughan dead at 93

Peter -

The north remembers, and so shall we.

Some very sad news came out of the United Kingdom earlier today, as it was confirmed that Peter Vaughan, best known for playing Maester Aemon on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” passed away early Tuesday at the age of 93. No cause of death was announced, but his agent Sally Long-Innes provided the following statement per Deadline:

“This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10.30 [GMT] this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.”

Vaughan is a man with an incredible career and legacy firmly behind him; he served in the military in World War II, and first started appearing on television all the way back in the 1950’s during the first golden age of television when we started to see many classic hits first appear. He was known at the time for appearing in adaptations of Charles Dickens classics, and eventually moved on to other work. His part on “Porridge” was incredibly popular several decades ago, but playing Aemon was a chance for him to surge into the public eye. The character was the last known member of the Targeryan family within Westeros (or at least it was that way before some Jon Snow theories started to come to light), and was a valuable leader within the Night’s Watch. He passed away during the fifth season, with Samwell Tarly providing his eulogy. he was thought of as one of the wisest men beyond the Wall during his time there.

Below, you can see some tributes from Lena Headey, Mark Gatiss, and other notable names from the “Game of Thrones” world who had a chance to either meet or work with Vaughan over the course of the series’ run.

Our thoughts and condolences go to everyone who knew Vaughan and adored him. (Photo: HBO.)
