‘Scandal’ season 6 poster released by ABC with Kerry Washington front and center

The sixth season of “Scandal” is going to (finally) be coming up on ABC come Thursday, January 19, and ABC is finally starting to roll out the promotional campaign for it — including the latest poster.

We’re not going to pretend like this poster is offering up any hidden clues or details about the upcoming batch of episodes, because it’s really not. The main purpose of it seemingly is to just give you a close-up of Kerry Washington’s face. Olivia Pope is going to be back in action, and the entire landscape of the show could be changing to go along with that.

This is far from the first time the series has marketed the show using primarily Olivia front and center — they know who their lead is, and what she brings to the table.

Remember here that in the early moments of season 6, you’re going to get a chance to learn whether or not Mellie Grant is the new President of the United States — and kudos to the show for realizing that everyone is going to be sick of elections by the time we roll around to January. That will give the show a little bit more of a stable backdrop for Olivia and the other Gladiators to work in.

Beyond that, Shonda Rhimes and company have excelled in not really tipping their cap too much one way or another regarding precisely what the storyline for the remainder of the season will be. There is a part of us that’d like to see it return a little bit more to its roots, and that means telling stories that are heavily influenced by current events while also at the same time taking on larger, character-based narratives.
