‘The X Factor’ UK debate: Would Saara Aalto be the biggest underdog winner ever?
This season of “The X Factor” may very well be the most bizarre in the entire history of the franchise airing. Just remember that we had a rapper named Honey G make it all the way to the top 5, despite the fact that many of her songs were just spent featuring her shouting her own name. We also had a few other shocking eliminations along the way, but despite all of that, we’d say that three of the top four acts remaining are ones that you could’ve seen coming from the start of the live shows: Emily Middlemas, Matt Terry, and 5 After Midnight. They’ve been consistent viewer favorites, and it took until this past week for one of them to make it into the bottom three.
Then, there’s the case of Saara Aalto, a woman we’re convinced may have the most interesting journey in the entire history of the franchise. Let’s take a look at the moment at precisely what she’s overcome to get into the top four.
1. Coming to the show following years of performing in Finland, so overcoming the natural disadvantage that comes from not having local fans inherently built in to the series.
2. Being at one point booed by the crowd over a last-minute performance during the Six-Chair Challenge, where she did not make it onto Simon Cowell’s team.
3. Getting through Judges’ Houses despite entering them as a wild-card act chosen by Nicole Scherzinger for Sharon Osbourne’s team.
4. Surviving through three separate sing-offs.
Basically, what we’re trying to say is that she’s overcome more than anyone else still remaining in the competition, as the other three were all picked by their mentor to enter judges’ houses and haven’t faced anywhere near the same adversity.
Should Saara win this season? That’s all in the eye of the beholder / the voter! It’s hard to really say. All we can tell you for certain is that if she was to win, she’d be the most unlikely and potentially the best underdog winner to date, and it’d certainly make for a really great story. We’d wager that Matt remains the favorite given that he’s of the archetype that usually does win the show, and after his performances this past weekend, we wouldn’t be mad about it.
