‘Vikings’ season 4 spoilers: Series boss on Ragnar’s new reality
The season 4 premiere of “Vikings” is going to be coming your way on History Wednesday night, and as a result of the time jump, we know that there are going to be a wide array of differences that are apparent almost from the very beginning. One of them will really boil down to the following oh-so-clear question: What’s going to happen when Ragnar returns? Years will have passed since Paris, and because of what happened to the Wessex settlement, he’s not going to be in a position anymore where he will be praised and revered extensively by the people he once was. The landscape’s very different, his children are older, and the alliances and sentiments are very much different.
In setting up this dynamic all the further to TV Guide, executive producer Michael Hirst passed along the following message:
“It just throws everything up in the air again … [Ragnar’s] closest allies – Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and people – have their own agendas now. It’s a rude awakening for them and they have to balance their feelings towards him with the general feeling of betrayal that a lot of people feel, including the sons.”
With what Hirst is saying in mind here, we’ve got even more of a feeling that the remainder of season 4 is going to be exciting, fast-paced, and dramatic. Unfortunately for Ragnar, we don’t get the sense that anything is every going to be as it once was. He’s only getting older, and with that, we figure that there are going to be new threats coming for him as a power struggle erupts and he has to find a way to merely keep up with the times.
