Could a ‘Gilmore Girls’ season 9 happen?
In just a matter of over twelve hours from the point of this writing, Netflix is going to debut what may be for many the most-anticipated series of the year: “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” It may only be four 90-minute episodes, but this should serve in some ways as the show’s eighth season. Just look at it this way: If these episodes were split up in the way that standard ones are, you basically have slightly more than eight episodes’ worth of content. That’s more than “The X-Files” had for their shortened return to TV last year.
So could a “Gilmore Girls” season 9 happen? We do think that when it comes to interest, it’s already abundantly clear that people would want to see it happen given how much chatter there’s been for this. We anticipated it would be big, but on this level? Not so much. While Netflix doesn’t release any sort of data / ratings information, we have to imagine that they are going to see some things that they are more than happy with.
In the end, we imagine that the future of the series beyond this current run is going to depend heavily on a few different things, starting with how “A Year in the Life” ends. You’re going to get the famous four words, and presumably, we’re sure that there will be some closure — even if some things are left open. After all, that’s life. Very little ever gets completely resolved in this word so that a particular ending is ensured for you. If doing more episodes will stretch the series out beyond what’s needed, there’s no point in continuing it.
Yet, who knows? It’s been almost ten years since the show last aired, and who’s to say that in another three or four years everyone could want to come back for another batch if there’s a good story and their schedules are available. Maybe this could become like “Sherlock,” a show that could turn back up at some point in the future.
