‘The X Factor’ UK: Former judge Cheryl Cole endorses … Honey G?
Well, this bit of “X Factor” news is probably going to be enough to send some minds out there into a little bit of a tailspin: Cheryl Cole, a former judge on the show and someone who found fame as a part of Girls Aloud before getting a successful solo career off of the ground, now seems fine with Honey G winning the show. This is the same Honey G who’s delivered a number of questionable performances and generated controversy all across the board.
Yet, at the same time Cheryl’s hardly declaring Honey G her winner because of the reasons you’d think. Rather, she’s telling Hello Magazine that much of the reason for the preference has to do with her family, as she is not actively watching the season:
“I have heard a lot about Honey G … My nieces and nephews think she is great and I really hope she wins, just for them.”
This is likely where the main appeal of Honey G comes from: Kids, who look at her and think that she’s almost a cartoon character in some way. She looks different and acts different than anyone else on the show, so she stands out. This particular demographic is much less concerned with whether or not someone has the capacity to hit all of the notes as they are with whether or not this person is entertaining or someone they can relate to on some level.
At the moment (and unfortunately for Cheryl’s nieces and nephews), we have a feeling that this coming weekend could be Honey G’s last stand. She’s up against four people who are considerably better performers, and of them Emily Middlemas, 5 After Midnight, and Matt Terry have never been in the bottom.
