How did ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ fare amidst World Series?

Given that we’ve spent every week chronicling the ratings journey of “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” we can’t stop that now when the show is starting to look like it may not finish as strong over “Hotel” as we’d previously hoped.

This past episode of the sixth season of the FX show drew just a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, its lowest number of the season by a pretty wide margin. Now that we’ve said that, though, there is a pretty reasonable explanation for why that happened. After all, this is a show that was forced to air against Game 7 of the World Series, and that is about the worst competition you can imagine for a show during the week.

As of right now, season 6 is averaging slightly less than 10% better ratings than the one that aired a year ago in “Hotel,” and the challenge moving forward will be seeing if it can shake things up at all in the numbers over the final part of this season. There are only a couple more episodes to go, and conventional wisdom would suggest that the ratings would rise when you consider the circumstances. This is especially true given that the World Series is over, and it should presumably be able to get back at least a slice of the audience that it just lost.

Also, there is a pretty substantial campaign around these final episodes already. Executive producer Ryan Murphy made it clear that there is an enormous twist coming with the season finale, and beyond that there’s also going to be an opportunity for us to learn just who of the remaining characters is going to survive “Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell,” the latest show-within-a-show that is present here.
