‘Hawaii Five-0’ season 7, episode 8 review: Will and Grace
Last time on “Hawaii Five-0” we had a major focus on our main cast as Steve and Catherine were reunited on a mission to rescue Steve’s mom from a black site. Steve learned a bit about how his mother felt about him as a child after reading her journal, Lou never figured out who Grace is dating for Danny’s peace of mind and Chin lost Sarah (but we hope not for good).
There was a small moment for Chin and Sarah tonight as he had her do a little bit of amateur spy work, but for the most part, their story — and many others — were put on the back burner for a really excellent episode that explored parenthood, young love, and of course some danger.
The scene was a winter formal and it was one that Danny got switched into working as a chaperone at the last minute due to his ex-wife having to change her plans. Don’t worry — he still brought Steve, Grover, and the rest of the poker guys sandwiches, ones that were apparently the greatest sandwiches in human history before taking off. While at the formal, Danny wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to see what was up with his daughter Grace, as he suspected that there was a new boyfriend in her life. Therefore, he tried to hire Grover’s son Will to do some digging for him — not realizing that Will was actually said boyfriend.
The entire journey for Danny tonight was really great, from his reaction to this news to trying to have a stern conversation with Will about his intentions to ultimately a hostage crisis breaking out in the school when a group of men tried to hold everyone ransom due to a diplomat’s son and a major political crisis happening over in the Philippines. Danny and Will had to put their awkward tension aside in order to work together, and that they ultimately did in helping to alert Grover and the authorities on the outside as to what was going on. This was a story mostly about teamwork, and Danny realizing that Will, while he may still be a teenager (and therefore worthy of Danny’s attention), was a good kid and he deserved a chance with Grace.
Eventually, of course the entire situation was resolved courtesy of some quick thinking, gunfire, and the rest of the Five-0 getting involved. Ultimately, Grover and Danny let their kids have their first dance in (some) privacy while Danny got some good news of his own — Grover did actually save him a sandwich, after all! Never have we wanted a sandwich as badly as we did after watching this episode.
We feel like we haven’t given Chi McBride enough credit in this review, given that Grover had some really fun moments with Will at the start of the episode in between doing the Cabbage Patch dance and the whole “the birds and the bees” talk. McBride’s got this really great ability to balance out humor and seriousness, and he makes all of characters the sort of cool guys you’d want to sit down with to play a game of cards.
Episode grade: A-. This was a relatively straightforward episode by most “Hawaii Five-0” standards, given that it was all about a piece-by-piece hostage crisis mixed in with some family drama. While the police part of this was well-executed, it was everything else that made it great. This felt in tune to what a school dance is probably like in 2016, while at the same time making the relationships between the characters authentic. We never thought any one of the core cast was in serious danger, so we found the entirety of the journey fun.
