‘Criminal Minds’ season 12, episode 4 sneak peek: Reid receives news on his mother

“Criminal Minds” season 12 is certainly an interesting beast at present. While we may not have Thomas Gibson on the series anymore, the show is finding some other ways to call back to past seasons. For example, Paget Brewster is now a regular, and we’re also going to be seeing Jane Lynch return as Reid’s mother for the first time in years. These are stories that should appeal very much to those who first enjoyed the show many years ago, when so many of these elements were first curated.

The sneak peek below (via TV Guide) doesn’t necessarily feature Lynch, but it does serve as a precursor as to what we’re going to be seeing from her moving forward this season. Reid receives a call here from the police in Las Vegas, and they don’t have good news for him while he is in the middle of an investigation. Apparently the police found her wandering around a casino with no recollection as to where she was.

Rossi and JJ both encourage Reid to go to Vegas to attend to her, and take as much time as he needs. We’re not sure if this is a sign that Matthew Gray Gubler’s role in this episode will be fairly limited in this episode, given that they have temporarily written off Reid before to tend to his mother. Since we do know that Lynch is coming up on the show at some point, you should be able to surmise that Gubler’s offscreen absence, if there is one, won’t last for very long at all.

We’ll be back tomorrow with more on this episode; for those of you who are Gibson fans awaiting a Hotch explanation, we do think one could be coming eventually, but probably not in this episode.
