‘The X Factor’ UK postmortem: Why Relley C was eliminated over Four of Diamonds, Honey G
This past weekend brought us arguably the first “shock” exit of “The X Factor” this season, as Relley C became the first member of Sharon Osbourne’s team of Overs to go home. Sharon may soon be regretting some of the decisions that she made at Judges’ Houses, given that we can easily see both Saara Aalto and Honey G also going before the top 5, leaving her sitting around as a spectator for the end of the competition. It’s a far cry to when she won the show working with Sam Bailey.
So what happened to cause Relley, despite having an amazing voice, to go home? We think that there are a few potentially-clear possibilities as to what went down.
1. Not enough airtime – Relley auditioned before, so the show didn’t feel a lot of pressure to promote her until later in the opening rounds of the competition. Compare that to the flood of screen time for someone like a Honey G; even Ryan Lawrie had a little bit more love as a wild card act, and it was easier for viewers to pick him for the Lifeline Vote.
2. No favorable placement – Relley performed around the middle of most shows, which further hurt her memorability. She was someone the series probably wanted to last another week or two, but there was no apparent investment made it keeping her around for the long haul.
3. No flashy song choices – She was somewhat predictable in what she chose to do, which can be the enemy of many singers who come on this show. She was so consistent that we figure many viewers out there likely did not come to appreciate her talents nearly as much as they should have.
Ultimately, just remember this: If you want someone to stay, vote for them! While the show may favor contestants over others in terms of airtime, they’re not rigging the vote and it can be toppled.
