‘This Is Us’ episode 5: Show boss on Olivia, Kevin’s future

On last night’s “This Is Us” episode, there were so many different events you could talk about, whether it be Randall’s own search for identity, Kate dealt with body-image issues for really the first time, and for Kevin, he felt what it was like to be on the outside both past and present.

For this particular piece, let’s focus more on what is happening with him now in terms of his acting career, as he ends up getting a new gig mostly because of The Manny seemingly, and not in any way because of a terrible audition. Where does the future take him now with Janet Montgomery’s Olivia? As executive producer Dan Fogelman tells Entertainment Weekly, he will probably be in a rather tricky position for some time:

“Kevin is in way over his head right now, and the next few episodes are really going to be exploring that. Olivia becomes a really big part of his story. She’s both the most appealing and the scariest woman to possibly enter someone’s life in Kevin’s position right now, so there’s huge fireworks. But also you can’t quite trust anything she’s doing because for her art comes first always. And for Kevin, who’s been the Manny for the last five years, she becomes a symbol of everything that makes him feel like he’s in over his head; she is the figurehead for that.”

In many ways, this could be an exciting challenge for him to take on for a little while, and we are absolutely invested in seeing how all of this ends. Like any other character on the show, we want Kevin to be happy — we just recognize how difficult it may be to get to that point given all of the struggles.
