‘Big Little Lies’ trailer: Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgard, Shailene Woodley star in HBO limited series

HBO -While HBO is in the habit these days of coming up with great, interesting limited-series concepts, there are not too many others out there like “Big Little Lies.” Just think for a moment here mostly from the vantage point of star power: You’ve got Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard of “True Blood” fame, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Adam Scott … and those are just some of the key players. While getting this group of people together is by no means guaranteeing a good product, it is making it rather clear that this is a network that means business.

If you’re not convinced just yet that this series is something special, may we present the official trailer below? This is the first official look from the network at the project, which seems to combine serenity and beautiful ocean views with violence, sex, and deception all over the place. The title makes us think that this is an adult version of “Pretty Little Liars,” but we have a feeling that there’s no killer roaming around here sending out text messages.

Like many other premium cable series these days, this is based off of a book — specifically, the author here is Liane Moriarty, who we imagine is a direct relative of Sherlock Holmes’ feared adversary. (We have a feeling that joke has been told many times over.) We don’t want to give too much away at present, but the fundamental story of this show is that it revolves around a group of moms who, thanks to some shocking actions, start to see their world unravel.

There’s no precise premiere date for “Big Little Lies” just yet, but HBO has some holes in their schedule between Christmastime and the return of “Game of Thrones” in the summer. “Vinyl” was recently canceled, and with the future of “The Night Of” uncertain this show and “The Leftovers” may be what the network relies on to get you back to Westeros.

What’s your take on the trailer? As always, we welcome all of your thoughts on the subject below! (Photo: HBO.)
