The eighth season of “The Vampire Diaries” is coming on the air a week from Friday, and with this being the final season, you gotta think that the show is going to be going big. They have to pay off the story so far, and then also hopefully set up a few other things that keep you guessing.
One of the things that we do know is that there is a final villain we will meet early on this season, and she could use the psychology of some of the show’s characters against them. Right now, Damon and Enzo are the two in the most vulnerable place, but who knows if it will stay that way? There could be many more characters who find themselves in a certain degree of danger before we make it to the end of the story.
While we know a few things about this potential villain, what makes it fun for the characters on the show at present is that they don’t know anything at all — including the character’s gender. For more on that, just take a look at what executive producer Julie Plec had to say to TV Guide:
“Part of the fun at the beginning of the season is that we don’t know the identity of or the supernatural definition of the big bad. There is no description for what was in that vault and what clawed creature has literally sunk its talons into Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) minds. So we are looking forward to unraveling that mystery in the first episode and laying the groundwork for a great backstory for this villain.”
Hopefully, this character is the thematic culmination of every villain that the show has presented to date, especially in terms of them being terrifying, but at the same time also incredibly smart, calculated, and someone who really persuade you into thinking that their way of doing things is correct.
