‘Victoria’ starring Jenna Coleman renewed by ITV for season 2

Victoria -

While we’re not sure ITV has found a replacement for “Downton Abbey” in “Victoria,” they have still found a bona-fide hit, and a show that they can be proud of for a rather substantial period of time. We weren’t quite sure if this show was meant to be anything more than a one-season story (many British series are that way), but today the network handed down the glorious news that there will be a season 2 in the future.

Speaking in a statement today, ITV director of television Kevin Lygo had the following to say about not only the renewal, but keeping writer Daisy Goodwin around alongside the cast and production company Mammoth Screen:

“Mammoth and Daisy Goodwin have brought the characters so vividly to life in this series, and we’re thrilled with the reception for Victoria. We’re pleased to be able to confirm that Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes will return to continue the story on ITV.”

Goodwin added the following in a statement of her own:

“Even though she reigned in the 19th century, Victoria is a heroine for our times. In the next series she faces the very modern dilemma of how to juggle children with her husband and her job. As Victoria will discover, it’s hard to be a wife, a mother and ruler of the most powerful nation on earth!”

One of the interesting storylines this year has been “Victoria” airing directly against “Poldark,” another Mammoth Screen production only with this one airing on BBC. So far the royal drama has come out on top, and that remains somewhat of a surprise to us given our sentiment of “Poldark” as an heir apparent to be Britain’s #1 scripted series.
