‘Big Brother 19’: A look towards the future
Tonight is a weird finale for “Big Brother,” given that there’s only going to be a week between the end of this season and the start of “Big Brother: Over the Top.” It’s rare that the next numerically-numbered season isn’t immediately following the one that just aired, but that is the case here.
So when is season 19 going to air? Roughly the same time as usual. It’s part of the typical canon, so expect it to premiere at some point next summer. It’s possible that there will be some twists that are influenced by the performance of “BB: OTT,” but for the most part we roughly expect this to be the same show that CBS has put on the air for many years now. (For the record, the regular canon season of “Big Brother” has been renewed through season 20.)
Should this be an All-Stars? While we’re probably going to come up with some sort of ideal wish-list cast over the coming days, we’d be surprised to go in that direction. Season 20 is a great round number for a “Heroes vs. Villains” or something like that, provided that Allison Grodner and company can get the right group together. We understand what the primary problem is with this concept, and that it’s a lot harder to convince “Big Brother” alumni to clear over three months of their schedule as opposed to “Survivor” alumni to maybe do a couple of months at most. Also, “Survivor” earns you more money, and you also aren’t being put up on the live feeds for everyone to see. “Survivor” may be more physically demanding while you’re out there, but our feeling is that “Big Brother” may be a more emotionally taxing experience after the fact.
Ultimately, we’ll have more news on season 19 when it comes out — but we could be waiting for a while…
