‘Dancing with the Stars 23’ spotlight: Will Calvin Johnson, Lindsay Arnold score this season?
Earlier this year, the news surprised many that Calvin Johnson was retiring from the NFL at the age of 30. Given his talent and his athletic ability, there certainly was a sentiment that he could have kept playing for many years to come. It’s with that we applaud him for thinking of his health first, and also realizing that there are so many other great things out there for him in the world beyond being a professional football player.
So where does Calvin stack up at his next challenge on “Dancing with the Stars” this coming season? You’ll find out below. (Here’s a hint: We think he’s going to do really well.)
Claim to fame – Wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, one known for incredibly athletic ability and for making spectacular catch after spectacular catch. When healthy during his playing career, he was considered one of the most dangerous people on the field at all times.
Partner – Lindsay Arnold. She’s become a regular part of the rotation as of late, and is coming off of deep runs with Alek Skarlatos and Wanya Morris. Could this be the time for her to get that coveted Mirrorball Trophy at the end of the competition?
Strengths – Obviously, athletic ability is high on the list. Calvin is strong, a hard worker, and has had plenty of time since the end of the NFL season to rest his body and heal past injuries. He’ll probably be a very good student, and as an athlete we’re sure he will be competitive.
Also, we don’t think many Lions fans hold it against him for retiring. He should have a fairly good chance at getting votes.
Weaknesses – The biggest physical challenge Calvin faces is probably his height. Taller contestants do at times struggle with posture and hold, and that is an issue that he will run into here. Also, maybe there’s a slight concern that with Laurie Hernandez on this season that he won’t be the most notable athlete in the cast.
Prediction – Honestly, we had a hard time coming up with negatives for Calvin given that there’s a pretty good chance that the finale rolls around, and we’re going to be looking at him and Hernandez competing for the Mirrorball Trophy. Like many other great wide receivers before him, he’s making it deep into the show.
