‘America’s Got Talent’ postmortem: Why Malevo, Blake Vogt, Musicality were eliminated
In looking back at this week’s “America’s Got Talent” performance show, and definitely was stronger than any we’ve seen so far this season. Specifically, you can make a case for why some acts should be through, and a few others should be eliminated. Personally, we’re for the most part happy for the field. There are maybe one or two things we’d change, but beyond that we’re not exactly shocked that three out of the five acts advancing are singers. That happens almost every time.
So why were a few other acts eliminated? That’s something we want to try and look at it at least briefly here.
Blake Vogt – Probably the guy who was the most victim to things outside of his control. He performed early in the show, and while he was great, many of his votes probably went to Jon Dorenbos a little bit later.
Deadly Games – Despite being a personal favorite of ours, knife-throwing and danger acts in general rarely perform well with the public. Some people simply don’t like to be afraid, even if these two are trained professionals who work hard to ensure there are no accidents. If nothing else, they can leave feeling like they’ve done something truly sensational that will boost their careers in a big way.
Malevo – This was another bummer for us, given that we could see them being the centerpiece of a larger Vegas show. We just don’t think that the energy and the passion that these guys use on stage translates to voters in the way that it should.
Musicality – Choirs can often be hard sells on this show; we do think they were much improved from their previous performance, but the odds with this particular lineup were stacked against them since it’s tough to get to know any one person from such a large group.
Lori Mae Hernandez – We simply felt like her act this time took a little time to get going, though it was really funny at the end. Also, the problem she faced is that there are a lot of voters from this show who are from the heartland, and they likely didn’t appreciate all of her jokes.
Edgar – In the end, these three just aren’t our personal cup of tea. Yet, they clearly had their fans, and they simply had the misfortune of being up for the Dunkin’ Save against Tape Face and Laura Bretan, two acts consider by many to be favorites to win the whole thing.

Agree with almost everything you said except that Blake was great. We’ve seen this “teleportation” trick at least twice before this season alone (Haro and Kadem Bart both did similar bits). And even Heidi could tell how it was done. It all just fell really flat. Jon has a MUCH more exciting act and I’m glad he advanced. I also have to say that Lori’s routine was just lame. Doesn’t matter if you live in the heartland or in trendy LA, the barbie stuff didn’t play. You know when Howie Mandel, who rarely criticizes any of the acts, says to get outside writers that the material is lacking. Her close was amazing though.
