Ratings: ‘The Voice’ with Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys has solid debut

The Voice -

The premiere of “The Voice” may not be until September, but last night NBC chose to give us a quick preview of what is to come the rest of the way in season 11. Two artists hit the stage for the blind auditions, and as a result of that Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys each got their first members of their team.

As a whole, the preview show last night also has something to celebrate in the ratings, drawing in total a solid 2.7 in the 18-49 demographic. It’s really hard to compare this to other seasons or episodes, mostly because the timing is so different. This is a Sunday in the summer, later than any episode of the show tends to air. It did have a nice lead-in, as the Closing Ceremonies for the Rio Olympics drew in total a 4.0. While the Games did draw some strong numbers for NBC, they were down versus London in 2012, a sign that either viewers are not watching TV as much, or they are growing dissatisfied with the network airing results and events later than they actually happen.

In terms of “Big Brother” and its ratings, one other thing that you have to think about here is that given the competition, a 1.8 rating is great. Sure, the show has drawn some weaker numbers here and there this season, but the rise in quality for the season the past few weeks has paid off in keeping people interested.

Granted, we do wonder if “Big Brother” ratings will fall once more if relatively-unpopular people make it to the end. For now, that does feel possible.
