TV Friendships: Can ‘Scandal’ season 6 restore things for Abby, Olivia?

Scandal -Remember the days on “Scandal” where we saw a tight bond between Olivia Pope and Abby? When they were in OPA together, there were contentious moments, but also ones of mutual celebration and teamwork. Since she joined the White House, it’s pretty clear that the dynamic has changed. What was once a close bond has now descended at times into chaos, and there have been numerous moments that their relationship was strained.

Could that change over the course of season 6, given that we are nearing a point where Fitz could be out of office? The election and its aftermath create many interesting dynamics, and for the sake of this TV Friendships article, we’re putting the focus almost entirely on this dynamic.

Where we left off – At the end of season 5, admittedly these two characters had a lot of other stuff to focus on. For Olivia, she was still trying to work some of her magic when it comes to Mellie and the election, and that included several communications with Fitz. However, these two did not really have a lot of time together in the process. While they didn’t end the season at each other’s throats necessarily, they were preoccupied and now they have experienced what it is like to sometimes be at odds.

Where we’d like to see them go – We feel like what happens to a President after their term ends has been fairly documented, but what about the cabinet? Where will some of these people go? If Fitz’s term ends in season 6, part of the fun of this story will be seeing if she turns towards Olivia for help, whether it be teaming up with her or trying to find a new place elsewhere. We would like to see them team up more directly with each other; heck, in general we’d like to see more of the OPA from earlier seasons, back when the show was simpler and a little easier to define. This simplicity could also help many relationships, not only the friendship that exists here.
