‘Supergirl’ – ‘The Flash’ musical event coming in 2017

Supergirl -

While some thought that this was inevitable, we actually didn’t see it coming — and now it’s here.

While at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour today, it was revealed that there is going to be a two-part musical crossover taking place at some point in 2017 between “Supergirl” season 2 and “The Flash” season 3.

From a casting point of view, it’s hard to argue against the idea as novel and smart. After all, you have Melissa Benoist as the lead of one show and Grant Gustin as the other, and both made a name for themselves on “Glee” before being cast in these roles. Meanwhile, “The Flash” has someone in Jesse L. Martin who is certainly musically-inclined, and the same goes for Jeremy Jordan on “Supergirl.” Some of the other cast members could easily have a secret musical background, and there are many actors in the extended DC Universe, including John Barrowman, who certainly could bring some musical chops to the table.

Ratings-wise, it’s also clear why producers would want to do this. It will bring more attention to both shows next year, and if it is coming at a time when viewership is sluggish, it could be a big boost for both shows similar to how the first crossover between them was. (For the record, this is not replacing a potential four-part crossover event this fall, as that is still being planned.)

The one thing we’re concerned about here is the story. Then again, if “Mr. Robot” can turn a third of its most-recent episode into a 1990’s sitcom, we figure that anything is possible and this could turn out just fine.
