‘Sherlock’ season 4: Steven Moffat hypes up Toby Jones’ upcoming villain
Villains are one of the reasons that “Sherlock” is so exciting as a series, and there are many of them that have to date been memorable. Of course, Moriarty is the most noteworthy, but there are others who have provided some sort of mental torment for our title character. The latest one who is coming aboard is Culverton Smith, a man played by brilliant character actor Toby Jones. He’s danger, conniving, and he may be sinister in a way no other adversary has been.
In speaking further about the struggles ahead in a chat with Collider, executive producer Steven Moffat passed along the following message:
“He’s completely different [to the villains that have come before]. It’s a completely different character. He’s the darkest villain we’ve had. There was always something charming and engaging about Moriarty. There was something fascinating and actually amoral, rather than immoral, about Charles Augustus Magnussen. This guy is the purest evil. Sherlock is actually appalled by him. He’s the most evil villain we’ve had. I don’t think that when you see it, you will disagree. He’s horrific.”
Basically, we have yet another reason to be excited about the story ahead, as if we were not already thrilled to have Benedict Cumberbatch back on our TV screen. There is still not an official premiere date for the fourth season, but the safest bet is that it will be happening early next year. We’re (of course) going to have even more updates as we get closer and there are more announcements coming out.
