‘The Fosters’ season 4, episode 5 review: Lena’s birthday pandemonium

Fosters -

You can certainly say that Monday night’s new episode of “The Fosters” was odd. After all, how else in the world do you explain that we had everything from tears to secrets to Lena being surrounded by two dancers in revealing clothing over the course of one hour?

Ultimately, tonight was Lena’s 40th birthday party, and that was the great news. The bad news was that due to a secret held by her father about the IRS, which could end up with the Adams Foster family losing their home. He basically operated without having all of the information about the house, which is why communication sometimes matters. With that being said, he’s still wrong in so many ways that it’s not even funny.

Speaking of secrets, Brandon keeping matters from his two moms remains a significant problem, especially when it comes to ways to earn easy money — such as pretending to be someone else for the sake of taking the SATs. For Callie, she is still trying to use all of her skills to help someone tied to her past, who she believes to be wrongfully accused. Mariana had a nice mini-diversion from Nick courtesy of a STEAM storyline, but the issue here is primarily that there is some obvious sexism that she is playing, something that may be true to life when it comes to how some in the science community act.

The writers did a great job when it comes to packing this episode full of content, given that we have not mentioned Ana and Mike strengthening their relationship or Jude eventually making headway with Noah, despite using him at first as a means to make Connor jealous. “Forty” was a move forward for the show, even if it does have us worried about the entire family’s future thanks to someone who doesn’t even live at the house. Grade: B+.
