‘The Night Of’ episode 2: How far should the story go?

The Night Of -

This past week, viewers of HBO had a chance to dive in and enjoy what may be one of the best premieres we’ve seen on the network since “True Detective” (you know, back when that show was great and well-respected). “The Night Of” proved itself to be brilliant storytelling, While it may have moved slowly, what it did give us was complex, fascinating storytelling that allowed you to see the world through the eyes of Nasir, a young man suspected of killing a woman he just met after spending the night together.

Given that this is a short series, we imagine that some progress will need to be made on Sunday night’s new episode in order to push the story forward … but how much so? That’s what we are interested in figuring out.

1. Naz’s family should arrive to the station – Now they know he is being held for a prime he does not believe he committed, so maybe they will help to calm him down and keep him from panicking further.

2. The defense will begin – John Stone is officially trying to help Naz out, but he has an uphill battle. A prolific detective in box has been brought in for the case, but Stone will ask an important question throughout: Why is he waiting so long to press charges? While there may be plenty of evidence from a knife to a witness, there may be something that stands out still about a guy with no record being arrested for this heinous a crime, especially with this demeanor.

3. What about other witnesses? – Two elements of the case we want to see brought up and discussed include the mystery man who was with the guy heckling Naz before entering the brownstone, and also the importance of that gas-station scene that there was so much emphasis on. It at least shows that there was nothing altogether sinister about Naz at that time.

4. Answers on the victim – Did she really live in this place? Does anyone else? Understanding her will be key to understanding if anyone else wanted to kill her.

If you missed it, earlier this week we sat down with Jason Prager and podcasted the entire premiere of “The Night Of.” You can watch or listen to that now over at the link here!
