‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13: Creator Shonda Rhimes supports Jesse Williams after petition
For those wondering whether or not Jesse Williams would face any trouble at “Grey’s Anatomy” over his powerful speech at the BET Awards, the simple answer is “no.” It’s hard to imagine why anyone felt like he ever would given that he was speaking his mind openly about important issues currently at the center of our national dialogue. Also, creator Shonda Rhimes had already supporting him on social media.
Nonetheless, there was a petition out there following his comments, one in which proclaimed he had given “hate speech against law enforcement and white people” at the awards. It has since received 5,000 signatures, but that’s really a drop in the barrel when you think about how many people in total actually watch this show, which was the #1 drama for ABC this past year.
Late yesterday, Rhimes made her thoughts on the petition clear: It’s not going to lead to anything, and therefore, there’s nothing to worry about.
In case you’re wondering precisely what some of his speech entailed at the BET Awards, here is a small sample of it (via TV Guide):
“We’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind, while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strained fruit.”
Williams was honored at the awards show for his work in the Black Lives Matter movement.
