‘Game of Thrones’ season 6, episode 8: Gwendoline Christine on Brienne, Jaime Lannister reunion

Brienne -

There were many awesome moments on “Game of Thrones” Sunday night, but for one, one of the most spectacular was clearly getting a chance to see Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth back in one room again. It’s been seasons since that has happened, and what was somehow odd about it was that the two characters effectively played this almost like a business transaction than any sort of welcome reunion between old friends.

In the end, the two were able to help each other: Brienne managed to get the soldiers of Riverrun to head north in order to assist in fighting Ramsay Bolton; meanwhile, Jaime managed to achieve his mission, and now gets to head back to King’s Landing with the entirety of the army. This is a good thing for him, since we have a feeling that his sister Cersei could really use him given the new rules set up by Tommen to keep trials by combat from happening.

In talking about this reunion, and getting to see such a cool side of Brienne, Gwendoline Christie had the following message to pass along to Entertainment Weekly:

“I was excited, It was really fun to be with Nikolaj again, and I thought the way of which their reunion happens is not really expected … I just loved that it was so formal, because within the confines of such formality, and having to negotiate with each other, there are so many other stories begging to be told in those moments. There’s a slow process of creeping familiarity among two people who haven’t been together for a long time; it was allowed to build. And I love that Brienne asserts her intelligence and her newfound mind of strategy and negotiates with Jaime and she gets the outcome she wants — he allows her safe passage to go in and negotiate. It wasn’t cliched in any way. You continue to see the strength of Brienne. She is so dedicated to the moral good she does everything she can to uphold her oath to Catelyn Stark.”
