‘UnREAL’ season 2, episode 1 reaction: Constance Zimmer on the ‘power struggle’

QuinnWhile the “UnREAL” season 2 premiere proved itself to be a wide array of different things, above all others, it was crazy and intense in all of the right ways. Specifically, we saw the rise of Chet once more as a villain, and if you hated him when he was barely willing to do anything with the show, you have to imagine that he will be even more horrible now that he is actually seeking some sort of active involvement in things.

The moment that Quinn realized that Chet took Darius, the suitor of “Everlasting,” away from the crew, there was a part of her that forced herself back into the role of showrunner. Is this a sign of things to come, to the point where Rachel will never get her chance completely? This is something that Constance Zimmer discusses in a postmortem for the premiere with The Hollywood Reporter:

“I think that she was ready and willing and able to hand it over, but the second the smallest thing goes wrong she’s also more than happy to take it back. This is to prove to Rachel that this is not a job that anybody can do. You have to be on the ball twenty-four-seven, and I think it’s a huge disappointment and makes Quinn angrier. She was looking forward to just relaxing a little bit but now she can’t even relax because Rachel messed things up and Chet got looped in. The power struggle now is between the three of them, which is not good because it means that none of them are really on the same team … She’s definitely going to put Rachel through the ringer a little bit in hopes that this would never happen again, but will she ever really let the show go? That’s the big question, for sure.”

We do think that Quinn is fine to let go of a little bit of control, but for her, the question always going to be “how long,” and if she will try to take right back over the moment something really scandalous occurs. It’s something that, ultimately, we should get a chance to see play out by the end of this season.
