‘Doctor Who’ season 10: New companion to be announced during FA Cup semi-final

Doctor Who -Isn’t the following bit of news when it comes to “Doctor Who” something to be excited about? It certainly is, but the timing of it is certainly odd.

Per a BBC News report, the upcoming companion / replacement for Jenna Coleman will be announced at halftime Saturday during the FA Cup semi-final between Everton and Manchester United. Why sports? It seems a little odd given that the sci-fi series is not something we necessarily correlate at all to football, but hey, there’ll be a ton of people watching. Also, we figure that a certain percentage of this could have to deal with the fact that this is around the time that the series does tend to air. (Technically, it’s an hour or two earlier at around 6:00 p.m. local time, but close enough.)

There have been rumors for some time about a new companion, but to date we feel like the only thing that has been necessarily confirmed is that this replacement will be female, and they will be appearing more than likely starting with the Christmas Special later this year.

Season 10 should premiere at some point in 2017, and it will be the last for showrunner Steven Moffat. Chris Chibnall will be taking over the role starting in the 11th season, and for the time being, the status of series star Peter Capaldi is not entirely clear. Hopefully, we will have some more news regarding that in due time, as well. We’d like to see him around for at least one more year, even if that is a long tenure for a Doctor.
