Jimmy Fallon mocks ‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Chicago PD,’ Facebook video with ‘Chicago Melon’

Tonight Show -

Sometimes, the most bizarre things seem to capture the greatest amount of attention. This was in pretty clear over the weekend, when a record 800,000+ people chose to watch a Facebook Live stream that was all about two BuzzFeed employees trying to force a watermelon to explode using only rubber bands.

For those really curious, you can watch that video over at the link here. It’s 45 minutes long, and before you know it you’ll find that a good part of your day is completely sucked away.

For those of you who want to watch a much shorter and sillier version, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has got you covered on that! The premise of the sketch below is that after looking at the crazy success of the BuzzFeed video, NBC has greenlit a series all about their own watermelon experiment, and since they want to optimize ratings, they’ve also got Dick Wolf involved. Enter “Chicago Melon.” Sure, Fallon’s using roughly the same joke we made during our recent April Fools’ story about NBC rebranding their entire network to Nothing But Chicago, but we haven’t gotten tired of “Chicago” franchise jokes just yet.

Probably the funniest thing about this video to us, though, is that clearly nobody on Fallon’s staff really wanted to sit there and spend the actual 45 minutes necessary to get enough rubber bands on the watermelon to have it blow up; they must have determined they had some better things to do. (Plus, after you’ve seen one watermelon explode with rubber bands, haven’t you really seen them all?)
