Ratings: ‘Nashville’ season 4, ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ up as ‘The Voice’ drops, ‘Strong’ not-so-strong
It’s getting more and more challenging to launch any sort of new reality competition show in 2016, and it does not really matter what it is. That is our big takeaway from Wednesday night’s primetime ratings, and we’ll have a little more information regarding that in time.
The good news – For now, let’s take a moment to actually rejoice in a few shows doing moderately well on the night, starting with “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” drawing its best rating since the premiere with a 1.5 in the 18-49 demographic. This is a move that does definitely aid its renewal efforts, given that this is a show competing with many other similarly-rated CBS shows hoping to have another season. Right now, it is averaging almost a 1.4 for the season, an increase from the 1.3 we were seeing from “Code Black” not too long ago.
Elsewhere, the news was also reasonably good for “Nashville” as it improved to a 1.0 off of its most-recent outing. While this is not great, the drama’s in a similar position to “Castle” in that it’s holding strong while other shows on ABC are plummeting. Therefore, we’d like to see it renewed for at least one more season.
The bad news – It was a bad night for reality TV in general. “Survivor: Kaoh Rong” (1.9) stayed low, though it did beat “The Voice” (1.7) in its first results show of the season. Meanwhile, “Strong” airing after the singing show generated roughly a 1.0 over the course of its two hours, and that’s using some generous rounding. This show does not have a strong future, and we could go all day with these puns, so we will stop while we are ahead.
Meanwhile, “Criminal Minds” (1.7) continues to struggle in its second episode without Shemar Moore and “Empire” (3.8) fell a little further down the hole.

Criminal Minds is hardly “struggling” and was only down slightly. Shemar Moore leaving hasn’t really impacted at all. It’s true that this week was a very poorly written episode which may impact on the next episode as everyone seems to agree it was the worst episode this season but that has nothing to do with Moore leaving. Production should invest in better writers instead of focusing on the guest cast and bring the show back to its intelligent profiling roots. But “struggling without Moore” – way to go with uber creative journalism!! Other sources report CM as being “steady” this week so please don’t sensationalize a very slight fall in the figures!
