‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 3 preview (PBS): Nonnatus House takes on typhoid outbreak

Patsy -On Sunday night, “Call the Midwife” gave us (spoiler alert!) perhaps one of the most heartbreaking stories we’ve seen across any TV show so far this year; while Barbara helped to ensure that a dying man got to see his newborn child, the future still remains the same – this child will grow up without a father.

We wish that we could say things were going to be getting easier and less sad on the show moving into the future, but we know that further sadness is coming. Let’s start this off by sharing the official synopsis below (via TV Guide) for the next new episode:

“A typhoid outbreak at Nonnatus House is investigated. In other events, Sister Winfred learns that an unwed teacher is pregnant by a married man.”

We can also tell you after watching the original airing in the UK that we’re going to see a major moral dilemma from Winifred in this episode. She has to figure out a way to reconcile how she feels about infidelity with how she feels about this patient, who is going to feel devastated and threatened by this circumstance. Even in the present day, these are the sort of circumstances that could lead to someone having a hard time coping with the public’s response; you can only imagine then how she would feel in the early 1960’s, prior to the free-love movement and at a time when public gossip was the #1 hobby of many people.
