March Makeovers: Did ‘Awkward’ season 5 do enough to reinvent itself?

AwkwardFor this edition of our March Makeovers series, we are fittingly getting a little bit awkward in discussing “Awkward.” Traditionally, we like to these articles when there is a longstanding pattern of stagnancy for a show, and we don’t get much evidence that things are going to change. Given that the show only recently jumped ahead a year in time, it’s very new and refreshing; yet, the more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s an expression that fits the one primary subject we’re going to touch on here.

Of course, there are some minor spoilers ahead if you are not caught up on the show read forward with that in mind.

What’s wrong – The biggest thing is that we’re all about Matty. The show has even given us meta-commentary on this point all about just how obsessed about Matty we’re getting. We do understand it in so many ways given that he is a main character and you want that whole will-they-or-won’t-they romance for as long as you can, but it’s tired at this point. Seeing him and Jenna do this same dance feels boring at this point, and it doesn’t matter if we were in high school or college.

How to fix it – This is easy: Get them together and keep them together. It really doesn’t feel like this is a show destined to leave Jenna single in the end, so why not get this out of the way? There are so many more things that Jenna in an adult relationship could explore, such as maintaining who she is and also sharing life goals, that are being left at the wayside thanks to the breakup. Also, think about the fact that this could be the final season. Wouldn’t it be worthwhile for fans of the show to actually see a handful of episodes of the central couple together before things came to a close? We certainly think that it’d be nice.
